Nine Frame Analysis

1. The first shot seen here is a band shot. We see the lead singer and gutarist, along with the basist and drummer. This introductary shot sets the scene and shows the band which the audience will recognise and relate with. Audiences like familiarity and something they can relate too. When the band starts playing, they sing and play to the camera, making the connection between them and the viewers. In this shot we see a black and white theme, all the band dressed in black, performing and a checkered board.

2. In this shot we see the lead singer in an all white costume accompanied by two people also dressed in white. One looks like she is serving him and the other looks like he is protecting him. His costume is elaborate, showing that he is someone important. The shot is a medium shot making the audience think that each individual is important.

3. Now we see a medium close-up of the lead singer once again, but this time dressed in an all black costume, as equally elaborate as the white costume. this makes the audience think that both characters are important and that there may be a good versus evil theme going on in the story.

4. the next significant shot is a chess board with only black pieces present and no oposition. The close up shot of his hand movng a piece on the board means that the movement is significant. Another thing which is significant is the chess board. This is also present in the first band shot we see, as they are performing on a floor like it.

5. Then we see a replica of the previous shot made with the white costume. The chessboard now though has only white pieces on it, we see him also move a piece. this leads the audience to believe that a chess game is in progress but with a difference. The medium shot once again shows the lead singer in his white costume, with his servant and protector.

6. We have just seen the body guards for both sides step forward to the positions the chess pieces were placed in. They then start to fight. Both are in aggresive stances and posed ready for violence.

7.We are then taken to a medium shot of the band again. They are all in black and the checkered floor coincides with the rest of the video. Even the instruments are black and white. The shot shows them playing to the camera and egaging with the audience, keeping the connection while the storyline is panning out.
8. This is another two shot of the 'pawns' fighting and the black one wins. The shot seen here shows the black pawn throwing the white pawn away from camera focus, showing him dominating the frame and showing his victory.
9. Just before the shot shown, both chess player get up and move to the centre of the board. The one in white takes off his hat in defeat and we cut to this medium close-up two shot, the one in white with his hand to his chest showing he lost nobely and the man in black with his arms raised showing his victory.
