Video Influences

There are many different aspects to a music video that we feel could influenced ours.

Of course the original video has specific conventions we would like to stick to and keep in line with the original genre and style of Paramore. We really like the fairytale aspect of the original and we think we could incorporate this into our own.

We are also taking inspiration from The Killers - Human. They set their video in a desolate place and we think that this would go well with our contrasting storylines.

We also like the loneliness of Natasha Beddingfield's - Soul mate I like all of the meet shots in it but what I like especially is how often you see her sad and lonely looking for what she is singing about. This would be good for the lead actress to watch and take things from.

Digipak Analysis

Shot Count Analysis

The video I have chosen to do is Evanescence – Call me when you’re sober.
In the whole video there are 180 camera shots. A lot of these shots a repeated but this doesn’t make the video boring however. I think this is due to the fact the shots are so fast paced that you don’t always realise. The editor of the video has also done something clever that makes the repetition entertaining. He cuts quickly from story to band a lot and quickly making it seem like he’s not repeating shots but telling a story with two means. There are forty shots in the first minute of the video and a lot of these shots are extreme close-up and close-up of the lead singer Ami-Lee. She is the first person we see in the video, this being aimed towards more of the male audience, as she is an attractive woman. Through the story the man she is singing too is shown in 23 shots, a lot of them two shots or close-up. There are also 49 band shots shown throughout the sequence, the kind of shots range from medium shots all the way up to extreme close-up. The video is about her breaking up with him because he doesn’t appreciate her and a lot of the shots get this message across, apart from the couple of shots she has with the wolves. This doesn’t seem relevant to the story but are beautifully composed shots.

Nine Frame Analysis

1. The first shot seen here is a band shot. We see the lead singer and gutarist, along with the basist and drummer. This introductary shot sets the scene and shows the band which the audience will recognise and relate with. Audiences like familiarity and something they can relate too. When the band starts playing, they sing and play to the camera, making the connection between them and the viewers. In this shot we see a black and white theme, all the band dressed in black, performing and a checkered board.

2. In this shot we see the lead singer in an all white costume accompanied by two people also dressed in white. One looks like she is serving him and the other looks like he is protecting him. His costume is elaborate, showing that he is someone important. The shot is a medium shot making the audience think that each individual is important.

3. Now we see a medium close-up of the lead singer once again, but this time dressed in an all black costume, as equally elaborate as the white costume. this makes the audience think that both characters are important and that there may be a good versus evil theme going on in the story.

4. the next significant shot is a chess board with only black pieces present and no oposition. The close up shot of his hand movng a piece on the board means that the movement is significant. Another thing which is significant is the chess board. This is also present in the first band shot we see, as they are performing on a floor like it.

5. Then we see a replica of the previous shot made with the white costume. The chessboard now though has only white pieces on it, we see him also move a piece. this leads the audience to believe that a chess game is in progress but with a difference. The medium shot once again shows the lead singer in his white costume, with his servant and protector.

6. We have just seen the body guards for both sides step forward to the positions the chess pieces were placed in. They then start to fight. Both are in aggresive stances and posed ready for violence.

7.We are then taken to a medium shot of the band again. They are all in black and the checkered floor coincides with the rest of the video. Even the instruments are black and white. The shot shows them playing to the camera and egaging with the audience, keeping the connection while the storyline is panning out.
8. This is another two shot of the 'pawns' fighting and the black one wins. The shot seen here shows the black pawn throwing the white pawn away from camera focus, showing him dominating the frame and showing his victory.
9. Just before the shot shown, both chess player get up and move to the centre of the board. The one in white takes off his hat in defeat and we cut to this medium close-up two shot, the one in white with his hand to his chest showing he lost nobely and the man in black with his arms raised showing his victory.
